Chapter Fifteen
The drive to town was uneventful and, while Cole was glad of that fact, he also was concerned Dominic would think this was a waste of time. Scarlet sat in the back seat next to Trace, chatting softly about whatever was on her mind. He was reminded of an elderly couple that used to attend church when he was young. The old man rarely spoke but his wife was cheerful and chattery.
Dominic kept an eye out the front window and said nothing, obviously preferring to keep his thoughts focused on the surroundings outside the car than those inside. Piperâs Ridge was small and only had one gas station with a convenience store. The other gas station sat just outside of town. It offered rapid oil changes but had nothing else inside.
Cole pulled into the gas station and glanced over the few cars in the lot. It was busy enough in there that the people would be a distraction inside. That would either work for them or against them. Anyone who tried anything would do so in front of witnesses. That also meant there was little Cole and Dominic could do to stop a situation once it had started. Use of force was strictly limited when innocents could get hurt.
Scarlet unbuckled and slid forward in her seat. âI can go in. If they are looking for Trace, then they might not notice me.â
âUnless they are still really looking for you and know that you used to live with Trace. They may have been watching Trace this entire time, thinking you might connect with him. They may have assumed you left Wayside Ranch to stay safe after the first attack and are only now finding out you stayed.â Cole hated to sound negative, but he wasnât about to let either of them get taken for a few packs of cigarettes.
âIâll go in. What kind does he want?â Cole insisted.
Trace made a soft growling sound and opened his door. Dominic reached back to grab him and Cole stopped him. They were never allowed to touch the guests in any way unless the guest reached out to them or verbally asked for something and never a romantic touch.
Dominic gave him a look, then changed tactics and rushed out of the car. Scarlet slid across the seat and followed after Trace. âTrace! Wait!â
Two men rushed out from behind the building, guns drawn. Trace froze in place, his arms spread like a prize fighter.
âThanks for leading us to the goods,â one of the men said then laughed.
Two cars pulled out of the lot and everything seemed to go silent. Cole couldnât focus on anything else as he drew his weapon and used his car as cover. They were just in too much of a populated area to do any good. How could he get Trace and Scarlet out of this safely?
Dominic took a few steps toward them and one of the gunman switched his aim from Trace to Dominic. âHold up there, Goliath. You stay right where you are.
